Key Stage 4
National/Foundation Award
The Welsh Baccalaureate is based on a Skills Challenge Certificate alongside supporting qualifications. The requirements of both the Skills Challenge Certificate and Supporting Qualifications must be met in order to achieve the overarching Welsh Baccalaureate.
The Skills Challenge certificate consists of four components which are followed by all learners;
- Individual Project (50%)
- Enterprise and Employability Challenge (20%)
- Global Citizenship Challenge (15%)
- Community Challenge (15%)
To attain the Foundation Qualification the student must complete the Skills Challenge Certificate and five supporting qualifications including Mathematics-Numeracy, English Language at A*-G.
To attain the National Qualification the student must complete the Skills Challenge Certificate and five supporting qualifications including Mathematics-Numeracy, English Language at A*-C.
Skills Challenge Certificate Components
Individual Project (50%)
The individual project is weighted at 50% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are in planning and organisation, critical thinking and problem solving and digital literacy. The assessment process should be presented in a written form of 1,000-2,000 words in length, with or without a product/artefact. Written work should be word processed and include a variety of graphs, images, statistical tables, diagrams and drawings.
Enterprise and Employability Challenge (20%)
The enterprise and employability challenge is weighted at 20% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are creativity and innovation, personal effectiveness and digital literacy. The learner must provide the following evidence for assessment Skills Audit, a Visual Display of a business proposal, Minutes of team meetings, Confirmation Statement of a Pitch and a Personal Reflection.
Global Citizenship Challenge (15%)
The global citizenship challenge is weighted at 15% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are critical thinking and problem solving and creativity and innovation. The learner must provide the following evidence for assessment a written Personal Standpoint, a Raising Awareness Pack and a Personal Review.
Community Challenge (15%)
The community challenge is weighted at 15% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are planning and organisation and personal effectiveness. The learner must provide the following evidence for assessment a Personal Digital Record that includes a Skills Audit, Plan, Personal Reflection and Confirmation Statement.
Key Stage 5
Advanced Award
The Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate falls within the Welsh Baccalaureate framework. It builds on the learner's previous education and allows for progression. It is based on a Skills Challenge Certificate alongside supporting qualifications. The requirements of both the Skills Challenge Certificate and Supporting Qualifications must be met in order to achieve the overarching Welsh Baccalaureate.

- Community Challenge (15%)
To attain the Advanced Qualification the student must complete the Skills Challenge Certificate and supporting qualifications.
The following Supporting Qualifications must be achieved either during the course or previously:
GCSE English Language at grade A* - C
GCSE Mathematics – Numeracy at grade A* - C
One of the following Supporting Qualifications options must be achieved during the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate programme:
Two A levels at grade A*- E;
One A level at grade A* - E and a Pass in one level 3 vocational qualification of at least 300 GLH;
Pass grade in one or two level 3 vocational qualifications which total at least 600 GLH.
Skills Challenge Certificate Components
Individual Project (50%)
The individual project is weighted at 50% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are in planning and organisation, critical thinking and problem solving and digital literacy. The Individual Project must be produced and presented either as a written account (3,000 –5,000 words in length) or an artefact/product supported by written evidence (1,500 – 3,000 words). There is a wide range of possibilities which can be chosen as a focus for the Individual Project and learners are encouraged to explore a subject with an emphasis on future educational or career aspirations. Written work should be word processed and include a variety of graphs, images, statistical tables, diagrams and drawings.
Enterprise and Employability Challenge (20%)
The enterprise and employability challenge is weighted at 20% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are creativity and innovation, personal effectiveness and digital literacy. The learner must provide the following evidence for assessment a digital ‘Destination Passport’. The supporting evidence in the
Destination Passport must include a Skills Audit, an Innovation Proposal and Presentation, Destination Plan, and a Personal Reflection.
Global Citizenship Challenge (15%)
The global citizenship challenge is weighted at 15% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are critical thinking and problem solving and creativity and innovation. The learner must provide the following evidence for assessment a Personal Standpoint, a Global Choices Conference Contribution and a Personal Review.
Community Challenge (15%)
The community challenge is weighted at 15% of the overall skills challenge certificate. The assessed skills are planning and organisation and personal effectiveness. The learner must provide the following evidence for assessment a Community Activity Proposal, a Confirmation Statement and a Personal Reflection Presentation of at least 10 minutes.
