Exceptional outcomes have been achieved at St Martin’s Sixth Form Centre once again as the school goes from strength to strength. 

A growing Sixth Form provider within Caerphilly with a total of 150 learners, strong academic success and impressive facilities was proud to announce that 96% of learners achieved the level 3 threshold of 2A level passes this year. The number of learners attaining A*/As rose by 6% to 23%. There was a 100% pass rate in 12 out of the 19 subjects studied by students this year. 

All students obtained the grades required to progress within their chosen career pathway and higher education across a diverse range of courses, apprenticeships and work placements.  

Mr Jarvis Headteacher congratulated the Sixth Form students on another exceptional year of results and wished the students well as they begin the next exciting chapter in their lives, knowing that they are now fully prepared for life beyond St Martin’s. 

The outstanding results were not limited to Year 13 with high standards being set by year 11 and 12 too.  There were some exceptional results attained by year 12 and some in year 11 who sat AS Levels a year early too.

The leader of the Sixth Form Miss Owen stated, “It is wonderful to be leading the school's Sixth Form Centre, which is at the heart of our community and so highly regarded within the area as a leading provider of Post-16 courses”. 

The governing body are highly supportive and have heavily invested in the facilities at the school which have been further enhanced this year by the creation of larger spaces for independent study and reflection. The highly skilled and experienced Sixth Form team of teachers provides quality provision within small class sizes which gives our students personalised support and guidance at such a critical time in their lives. 

Providing personalised tutoring, within small class sizes enables teachers to give our students the individual attention and guidance that they require at this stage in their lives when they are studying at such a high level. Coupling this with the impressive facilities available to all learners are the key ingredients for success at this level

The number of learners attaining 3A*-C also rose to 70% of the year group with 25 % achieving A*/A grades. 

All students obtained the grades required to progress within their chosen career pathway and higher education across a diverse range of university courses, apprenticeships and work placements.

Students on their way to St Martin’s in Caerphilly this morning now have extra reason to be proud of their learning community after it was named both the ‘Secondary School’ and headline ‘School of the Year’. Meanwhile their Lee Jarvis took the mantle of ‘Head Teacher of the Year’.

Where possible, Key Stage 3 will have an opportunity to view the books during one of their English lessons, but the fair will open every day to all learners during break, lunch or after school.

Payment, where possible, will be made online and a book fair order form will be issued during the event next week.

The competition dates are as follows:

Welsh Regional: Sunday 23rd January 2022 at Sports Wales National Centre, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff CF11 9SW

Central Zonal: Sunday 30th January 2022 at Hinckley Leisure Centre, Argents Mead, Hinckley LE10 1BZ

National Finals: Saturday 12th March 2022 at tbc (Yorkshire Region to host)

Because of the short time between the Welsh Regional and Zonal competition, completed entry forms and payment MUST be submitted in person on the Welsh Regional Sunday 23rd January competition day. Details will be available nearer the time. No entries will be allowed at any other time.

As the current Covid-19 situation is unpredictable, please be patient if rules for the running of the competition change frequently leading up to the competition day. There may be limits on spectator numbers and we may ask all gymnasts to leave the venue as soon as their group's medal ceremony is completed. Please make allowances for this when arranging chaperones.

Currently, the competition will be held on 6x4 beds.

The examinations that you have sat and the assessments that you have undertaken this year have been more rigorous in comparison to the usual set of exams that would be undertaken in a 'normal year'. This is both in terms of the number of exams and the difficulty level and as a result, you can be assured that the results you have attained are as a consequence of your efforts and a true reflection of your ability.

The format of these assessments are also more akin to how you would be assessed in the world of work and industry where multiple elements would be used to formulate a decision on your abilities and for that reason you are now better equipped to face the challenges of the next stage in your education or the world of work. 

Whilst the journey we have all been on throughout this pandemic has been tough, I have been immensely proud of how you as a generation have adapted and overcome such testing times, both in your personal lives and your educational experiences. The difficulties that you have overcome alongside us and your families will stay with us all forever but I am confident that you will have a strengthened ability to deal with adversity throughout your lives. 

The world needs your skills and abilities to tackle the problems it has and I have every confidence that the world will be a better place due to your input in future years as you move into the workplace and begin to shape our future. 

Enjoy the celebrations with your families and friends and we look forward to seeing those who join our Sixth Form in September and to hearing about the experiences of those who choose to study elsewhere or begin their working lives.

Our winning team, ‘New Leaf Sustainability’, created and sold sustainable bamboo plant pots that can be recycled as drinking cups.  Joshua Webb, Sales Director for the company, said: “‘Overall, taking part in Young Enterprise has been exceptionally enjoyable. The different elements involved in the competition enabled me to ascertain and develop many unique skills which can be used in day-to-day life. I am looking forward to the UK final , and believe that New Leaf Sustainable’s recent success was warranted due to the team’s dedication and hard work. The experience so far has been thought provoking. Young Enterprise has replicated business-like scenarios which will undoubtedly help those with such career ambitions in the future!” - Josh, we could not have said it better!

Their resilience and determination has been inspiring to all. Boys, you have been a credit to yourselves, the school, and we are all extremely proud of you! Good Luck for the UK finals!
